Rupert Giles
Giles was born in England and destined to be a Watcher, someone who trains and guides Slayers. Both his father and grandmother were Watchers, but young Giles rebelled. While attending Oxford University, he dabbled in the occult and the dark arts with his friends, and was given the moniker “Ripper.” Giles eventually saw the right of way, and while working as a museum curator in England, the Watcher's Council assigned him to Buffy in Sunnydale. Giles moved to Sunnydale, where he worked as the Sunnydale High librarian, and began Buffy’s training. He and Buffy have developed a close father-daughter-like relationship, but this also led to his dismissal as her Watcher by the Council, when he interfered with their Slayer’s rite of passage test. Giles hasn’t really had too much of a personal life, except for his brief romance with the computer science teacher Jenny Calendar (who was later killed by Angelus) and his on-off affair with an old friend named Olivia. Giles is somewhat uptight and conservative, but is also well-read, intelligent, can play the guitar, fence, knows five languages, and can hold his own in a fight. Although he is still unofficially Buffy’s Watcher, Giles is currently unemployed.
