“The One With Monica’s Thunder”
Oh, that Monica. She makes me so angry, in a way that just 24 hours ago, only Dawson Leery could match. Is it possible that Monica just may be more annoying than our friend Dawson? Discuss amongst yourselves.
In “Friends” seventh season premiere, Monica reached new heights of annoyingness when the episode opened with her announcing her engagement to Chandler to the entire population of New York, by shouting it from her pseudo balcony/fire escape. Sadly enough, I’m really beginning to think Chandler should just give up and go back to Janice. At least she appreciated him. While the whole gang is getting ready to go out and celebrate, Rachel suddenly starts to feel lonely. Now we all know what happens when Rachel feels lonely…
That’s right, she complains to Ross. Poor Ross lets Rachel convince him that she’s feeling as if she’ll never get married and that they never had that “one night” of sex that all couples have after they breakup. Um, hello? I seem to remember a certain incident at the beach, oh I don’t know maybe at the end of the third season? I think the writers have given themselves a soap opera case of temporary amnesia or something. Anyway, she makes up a whole story about how Ross was good with his hands or something (don’t ask) and convinces him to sleep with her for one night. However, their plans go awry when Monica sees them kissing in the hallway.
Meanwhile, Phoebe is begging Monica to let her sing at the wedding by constantly making up silly songs about Monica and Chandler, containing lyrics like “When I first met Chandler, I thought he was gay…” Also, Joey has an audition to play a nineteen year-old, and is convinced he can act nineteen, so he starts practicing on his friends, who just think he’s weird.
Now Monica is upset because she is convinced that Rachel is “stealing her thunder.” After about twenty more minutes of Monica being annoying, Rachel finally admits to Monica (and Ross) that the only reason she wanted to sleep with Ross was because she was sad, and feeling as if she would never get married. She apologizes to Monica (not Ross) for ruining her night, and they make up. I’m very angry at Rachel for manipulating and using Ross like that. As far as I’m concerned, Rachel is not allowed to be my friend again until she apologizes to Ross.
The tag (you know, that little scene that rolls over the credits) consisted of Phoebe singing another one of her silly songs. It was the funniest moment of the entire episode.
