Bill's Intro: Royal Rumble
So I’m sitting in my room last Sunday, getting ready to watch the Golden
Globes, when the phone rings at 7:59. It’s my main wrestling buddy Chris and
he says, “The satellite is operational. Royal Rumble is ON!” So I sprint out
the door of Eliot House and blaze down the street to Leverett House and get
there about two minutes into the Dudley Boys/Edge & Christian match. Sure, I
had my Shakespeare final the next day, but which event do you think I’m going
to remember twenty years from now?
In a nutshell, Royal Rumble was the best WWF pay-per-view since Summerslam
2000. Aside from the almost pitifully bad Chyna/Ivory dud, the card gets high
marks across the board. I would like to compliment Chris Jericho and Chris
Benoit for putting on the BEST GODDAMN LADDER MATCH OF ALL TIME, as well as
Trish and Stephanie for putting on the best catfight I’ve seen in many moons.
The Rumble itself was full of all sorts of goodies, including a cameo appearance
from the Honky Tonk Man that nearly caused my friends and I to blow the roof
off. I was shocked that Kurt Angle escaped with the WWF Title, but I guess the
WWF wants to keep fueling the Triple H / Stone Cold Steve Austin feud.
Ultimately, the show was a great overall effort that was only sweetened by Y2J
and the Dudley Boys regaining WWF gold.
Onto Smackdown. Brought to you from Mobile, Alabama, home of the Holly
cousins. Your hosts are Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler.
